The position for Treasurer is currently vacant.
Note: Wanda Dean will be on a year's leave of absence.
Newest Board Member: Anastasia Steinbrunner, nominated by
Gabe Vargo, is our newest board member. She grew up in rural Ohio watching the
birds with her mom. She is fond of telling folks that her first word was bird,
or rather “bir-da.” Anastasia moved to Chicago and, after graduating with a
degree in English Education, worked at Emily Oaks Nature Center in Skokie.
There she refined her skills in outdoor education and began seriously birding
with her life list. She also volunteered with “Chicago Bird Collision Monitors”
rescuing injured migratory birds. After moving to Clearwater in September,
Anastasia attended the Audubon Assembly to network with fellow birders. Her enthusiasm
for and dedication to wildlife and habitats led her to volunteer with the birds
of prey at Boyd Hill. She says she looks forward to many nature adventures in
her new home state.
SPAS
is very fortunate to add Anastasia to the board!
New WingSpan Editor: Cara Kuhn graduated from the
University of Florida in 2006 with a degree in Telecommunications. She got a
job with the Fox station in Fort Myers. It was there she discovered birding
after reading Life List by Olivia Gentile. After picking up a pair of $20
binoculars and a Peterson field guide, she was hooked! She moved from Fort Myers to St. Petersburg,
met her husband, and finally bought a better pair of binoculars. Cara’s current job is “Promotions Producer”
with Channel 10, the CBS affiliate located in St. Petersburg. She says her job
can be a little difficult to explain - “I write, shoot, and edit the promotions
that air in commercial breaks during primetime. These promotions showcase the
stories that the news will have on at 11. So, if you are watching NCIS or
Person of Interest, and you see Reggie Roundtree come on TV and say something
like ‘It’s the newest craze - and it could be hurting your children! Everything
you need to know to keep them safe - on 10 News at 11,’ that’s what I do.” Cara is courageously taking over as editor
AND doing the graphics of WingSpan, replacing Wanda Dean and Christina Evans.
We are excited to have such a professional fill these vacancies.
Thank you Christina for your years of dedication and designing one heck of a great newsletter.
