Tampa Bay's largest salt marsh planting on record!
Tampa Bay Watch, SWFWMD-SWIM, FDEP, and FWCC are planning to execute the largest volunteer marsh planting in the history of Tampa Bay. The event is planned for two sectors of the Terra Ceia Ecosystem Restoration Project located in northern Manatee County.
On Saturday, 9/29 at 9 A.M., 350 volunteers needed will be scattered over 34 acres of restored/created estuarine wetlands. Thirty thousand (30,000) plugs of salt marsh is what we plan to install; the current record is from a planting in October 2005 at the Braided Tidal Creek phase of the Cockroach Bay project.
Bring clothes that you would getting mud on and closed toed shoes. Bring water bottle. Water will be provided.
225 volunteers planted 22,500 plugs of salt marsh in about 2.5 hours.
Where to meet:
The event will occur at two restoration sites adjacent to the Bishop Harbor Boat Ramp (Bishop Harbor Road, just west of US 41). From St.Petersburg, take I-275 south to US 41 (exit 2); go left (north) to Bishop Harbor Road, turn left (west) and drive an estimated 0.25 mile to the Bishop Harbor Boat Ramp. From Tampa, take I-75 south to Exit 229 (Moccasin Wallow Road), and go right (west) about 2 miles; cross US 41 and the road becomes Bishop Harbor Road. Drive an estimated 0.25 miles to the Bishop Harbor Boat Ramp.
