Pinellas County is home to many beach nesting birds.
- Least terns
- Oyster catchers
- Royal terns
- Sandwich terns
- and Laughing gulls need our beaches to raise their families.
Our beaches are crowded with human visitors, these nesting birds often
get disturbed and their nesting efforts fail. SPAS Beach Nesting Birds
Project has made protecting nesting colonies of birds a priority in
these summer months.
Bird stewards are needed. The nesting areas are roped off, but many
people don't know why these birds are nesting on the beaches. Armed
with our educational packets, you can help explain why these birds rely
on the beaches to nest and what we can do to help.
We also keep our
eyes open for human disturbances and contact the authorities with
information We do not do law enforcement, just education. If you are
new to stewarding, someone will be available to train you.
We have wonderful colonies on:
- Ft DeSoto
- Suncoast Coast Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores
- Shell Key
- and Egmont Key.
