Tampa Baywatch need 15-20 volunteers to help shovel shell to create a total of 355 feet of
oyster shell bar on Tarpon Key’s southwestern shoreline.
Establishment of oyster bars
along the shorelines of both islands will buffer the area from wave action,
providing optimal conditions for the settlement of additional salt marsh plants
and mangroves. New oyster communities will further enhance and protect
local biodiversity through the creation of foraging areas and continued refuge
for the many species of fish and birds inhabiting both islands. If you
have not participated in an oyster bar project before, then you won't want to
miss it!
There is a considerable
amount of hard work involved, but by the end of the morning you will be able to
see the wonderful result of your hard work!
Please
wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty/wet and closed toed shoes that can
also get dirty/wet. Gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own
work gloves if you have them
