Ocean Conservancy is moving into the LAST PHASE of their 18 mos long
project to reduce wildlife entanglement at the South Skyway Fishing
Pier, but we need volunteers to help with the last few months!
Over the past year, we installed 42 Fishing Line Recycling Bins and
posted signs with "Dolphin Friendly Fishing Tips" to try to reduce the
amount of fishing line entering the water, as well as cut-down on
dolphin-angler interactions.
We've done cleanups at the south skyway pier (including commercial
divers who removed 4,000 pounds of entangling nets and ropes).
Volunteers have walked along the pier and spoken to anglers about using
the fishing line recycling bins, and tips to avoid dolphins while
fishing. Now we need to know if all our efforts worked!
Starting in Mid-July, and continuing through August,
we will be surveying anglers, and collecting fishing line on the ground
and in the recycling bins, and comparing the info to what we saw before
we started the project. We need 20-30 volunteers to work 3-4 hours shifts perhaps once a week or every other week to help us accomplish this task.
Volunteers are asked to attend ONE of two training session:
1. Thurs July 10, 5:30 pm, South Skyway Fishing Pier
2. Either Sun July 13, 2pm or Mon July 14, 6pm.
If you are interested, would like to attend a training session, or
would like more information about days and times of volunteer shifts,
see the following information.
