The Ocean Conservancy needs volunteers to launch its new project the "South Skyway Pier Project" to remove entangling marine debris from the pier from the shoreline as well underwater.

They want to:minimize the re-accumulation of monofilament line by:
  • Post recycling bins for fishing line.
  • Post signs and provide information for Better Fishing Practices.
  • Speak one on one with the anglers on the pier.

Project will proceeed in 3 phases.
  1. Monitoring/Data Collection (July - August)
  2. Skyway Pier Cleanup (September)
  3. (III) Pier Walkers (October - ???)
Volunteer hours will vary for each project.

Phase I.  Monitoring/Data Collection Volunteers

How many:       5-10 Volunteers needed in Late June – August 2007. (Also, Jan – Mar 08 and Jun – Sept 08) for one or more shifts per week during each time period. Shifts last approx. 4 hours.  Weekday and weekend shifts available. Must be able to walk 3+ miles.

Tasks:  Able to work at least one shift per week as Survey Assistant and/or Line Collector.

  1. Survey Assistants will work with Team Leaders to interview anglers to assess knowledge, attitude, and awareness related to debris, fishing line recycling and dolphin interactions.  Shifts are currently available T, W, Sat, and Sun from 4 pm for approx 4 hours. 
  2. Line Collectors will walk the pier and collect/measure discarded fishing line.  Shifts currently available Tues evening, Sat afternoon, and Sun afternoon, but we are looking to add one more shift (perhaps Thurs morning).
  3. Phase 2: Pier Cleanup Volunteers (International Coastal Cleanup)

50 Volunteers needed from September 3 – 21. Especially September 15 (International Coastal Cleanup; ICC).

  1.  ICC: Saturday September 15, 2007. Cleanup South Skyway Pier and surrounding areas: pier, shoreline, shallow-water embayment.  Primarily land-based volunteers needed, but boaters welcome to help with shallow embayments.  Willing to get dirty. One day event.

  2. Monitors during Underwater Cleanup: We are working with Commercial Divers and Hills County Sheriff to do underwater cleanups of the Fishing Pier.  We need volunteers on top of the pier, monitoring the surface and directing anglers away from the area where divers are in the water. Needed weekdays throughout September. Shade available.
Phase 3: Pier Walkers

25 – 30 Volunteers needed.  Starting in October, continuing long-term

Tasks:  Able to consistently work at least one shift per week (several shift day/times available, but once you commit to a shift, we need you to work that same shift every week).  Working in two-person teams, cleaning up monofilament line from the South Skyway Fishing Pier, monitoring monofilament recycling bins, interacting with anglers to raise awareness of the dangers of monofilament debris and dolphin interactions.  Training will be available (but is not mandatory); “Talking Points” will be provided.
