Bird Stewards for July Fourth

WIll You Help Protect Nesting Shorebirds Over the Fourth of July?

Hello St. Pete Audubon members!

The 4th of July holiday is quickly approaching, and bird stewards are needed to help during the day & evening of the 4th as well as the weekends before and after. We can expect large crowds on the beaches throughout the week, so any time spent educating the public with help the shorebirds! The loud noises and bright lights of fireworks can cause colonies to abandon their nesting sites. Ft. De Soto will need help during the days to protect the North Beach sanctuary. The St. Pete Beach Black Skimmers will need help especially in the evenings, since the colony is located near a bar. The hotels nearby are very supportive of the birds! The Indian Shores Black Skimmers will also need extra help in the evenings. Both colonies will be very close to hatching during this week and will be very vulnerable.

If you can help during the holiday, please contact Kealy McNeal (kmcneal@audubon.org) for Ft. De Soto and St. Pete Beach. Contact Monica Craig (mcraig@audubon.org) for Indian Shores.

Thank you for your support and for your help during the busy holiday!
