“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” John Muir

The past few years have provided opportunities to adapt, while we are still holding virtual meetings, we were able to do a hybrid workshops for the Teacher Ecology Camp. 2021 has been a year of changes, we hope to resume face to face meetings with members again in the coming months and increase capacity for our popular field trips. With more of our neighbors spending time outside and observing the world around them, many of us have been sharing our knowledge of the natural world, we would love to have them join us on future field trips or meetings to enjoy a featured speaker. Our first two meetings of the season were a resounding success, with the latest on Tampa Bay’s Red Tide and Bats of the World being the latest topics. We can’t wait for you to join us for the remainder of this season’s programs.

Hooked Bird – Our Hooked Bird Program at Fort De Soto Park continues to be successful, with volunteers leading the effort to unhook Pelicans that have been caught in fishing line and educating the fishing public. New educational signs have been installed throughout the pier.

Clean-ups- We partnered with ECOmersion to do a few cleanups on throughout St. Petersburg. During our cleanup efforts on Shell Key we cleaned up 40 lbs of trash, under very watchful eyes.

Teacher Ecology Camp – The hybrid nature of the experience this year allowed Laura Packard to reach teachers, college students and environmental educators from Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk and Palm Beach Counties. We also had a participant from Fulton County, Georgia. Due to the presence of Red Tide the field trip component was moved to Weedon Island.. All participants in these workshops received Project Wild certification and curriculum materials to use in their classrooms. The trip to Lettuce Lake Park provided an opportunity for participants to identify the plants and wildlife found in a river/swamp habitat.

Website- We recently launched a new website, which should make it easier to sign up for field trips and see the latest SPAS happenings.

As we enter our 113th year, we have an exciting year of meetings and field trips planned and we look forward to see you all in person as soon as possible. We look forward to what the end of 2021 and 2022 will bring, we want to you to know we truly appreciate everything you all do. None of our accomplishments would be possible without our dedicated volunteers, donors and members. Help us make the next year the best St. Pete Audubon has, where we can continue our outreach efforts and protecting the critical, local bird populations. Would you be able to help us with our programs this year? If you would like to help you can make a donation using the button above or become a local member.
